Riding waves and strengthening connections

Veterans recently enjoyed a fantastic morning on the water as part of Soldier On’s Reel & Wave Wellness Program, with perfect conditions making for a memorable day at One Mile Beach.

Held under sunny skies in warm winter weather, the session featured beginner and advanced surfing lessons, giving participants the opportunity to get active, enjoy the outdoors and spend time connecting with fellow veterans. Whether they were stepping onto a surfboard for the first time or building on existing skills, everyone was encouraged to participate in a relaxed and supportive environment.

The surfing session forms part of Soldier On’s Reel & Wave Wellness Program: Connecting Veterans through Surfing and Fishing in Central Coast & Newcastle, made possible through funding from the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Veteran Wellbeing Grants Program.

The program has been designed to strengthen social connection, reduce social isolation and promote healthy lifestyles through shared recreational experiences. By bringing veterans together to take part in surfing and fishing activities, the program provides opportunities to spend time outdoors, connect with others and enjoy the wellbeing benefits of regular physical activity.

Developed in response to feedback from local veteran communities and Soldier On participants, the program recognises the importance of creating opportunities for veterans to come together in welcoming, inclusive settings. Structured activities led by experienced instructors provide a safe environment where participants can learn new skills, enjoy shared experiences and strengthen their connections with the veteran community.

Programs like Reel & Wave Wellness play an important role in supporting veterans beyond their service by encouraging participation, fostering connection and creating opportunities to engage in meaningful activities alongside others with shared experiences. The combination of physical activity, time in nature and social interaction reflects Soldier On’s commitment to supporting the overall wellbeing of veterans and their families.

Soldier On is proud to deliver initiatives that help veterans stay connected to their communities while supporting healthier, more active lifestyles. The organisation is grateful to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for its support through the Veteran Wellbeing Grants Program, enabling programs such as Reel & Wave Wellness to make a positive difference for veterans across the Central Coast and Newcastle regions.

With plenty of waves, sunshine and encouragement throughout the morning, the session was a great reminder of the value of spending time together, trying something new and strengthening the connections that support long-term wellbeing.
