The Pledge

In recognition of the skills, leadership, and training of those who have served Australia in a national security capacity, take the Pledge and commit to supporting employment of service personnel.

The Soldier On Pledge is a way that corporate Australia can thank Australian Service Personnel for their service and recognise the exemplary skills, leadership and training of those who have served Australia. Companies that sign the Pledge commit to learning more about the skills and attributes that ex-service personnel and family members can bring to and benefit their organisation. The Pledge works to providing greater access to job opportunities for Service personnel, veterans and family members but does not guaranteeing jobs but maintains existing recruitment processes that are supported by Soldier On.

The Pledge is a free and non-binding agreement to support Australian Service Personnel and their families, by offering a “Hand up, not a hand out”.  As part of the Pledge, the Soldier On employment team provide support and advocacy for candidates that are Soldier On participants as part of existing recruitment processes within departments and companies. The Pledge and Employment Program form a channel by which Service Personnel, Veterans and Families can identify supportive organisation and also allows Australian organisations to work to recruit the huge skills, talent and abilities of those who have served Australia.

Processes to support Pledge Companies

Soldier On works directly with “Pledge” companies to provide advice about employing and recruiting service personnel, veterans and family members,  as well as help provide quality applicants. The Pledge process and all stages of the Employment Program are free.

Soldier On Pledge companies are invited to have jobs posted on the Soldier On Job Board where we currently have over 400 jobs open on the Soldier On Job Board (http://pathways.soldieron.org.au/) and all services are free to service personnel.

Support for Pledge companies is ongoing to ensure the most effective and streamlined processes are in place. Companies are also invited to attend Pathways Networking Events which provide a relaxed and comfortable event over two hours in one of Soldier On Locations or hosted by one of our Pledge partners.

Pathways Networking Events

The Soldier On Pathways Networking Events are about providing a relaxed and comfortable time for our participants to meet, ask questions, and talk with representatives from HR and Recruitment teams from the corporate sector to discuss opportunities and techniques that can assist them in transitioning. Doing so in a relaxed and informal way can help our participants find what career path best suits them, as well as build connections with pledge companies that support Soldier On. The events are set up as speed networking with tables and chairs and light snacks provided. The Pathways events give Australian Service Personnel  an opportunity to not only present themselves to prospective employers but an opportunity to ask questions too of prospective employers as this really can help to work out which industry they may want to pursue once leaving the defence forces or currently.

Feedback from Soldier On participants who have attended Pathways Networking Events includes:

“The Networking is a great idea to help people back into the workforce, or find new employment”

“It let me see that there are companies out there willing to help and meeting people who are serious about helping”

I was able to engage with prospective employer to gather an insight into what the companies had to offer. This also gave me the opportunity to provide the companies with information about myself and my employment expectations.

“Got to meet people with skill sets that are applicable to our business”- Pledge company representative

“Broadened my horizons. Got to finally see what companies are out there who love employing ex-defence personnel”

“Networking with face-to-face time with companies is valued and helps getting your foot in the door post defence.”
